MRCOG Part 1: Quick Answers
Common questions about MRCOG Part 1 examination.
Most candidates need 3-6 months of structured study. The exact duration depends on your background, available study time, and baseline knowledge. Working professionals typically follow a 6-month plan, while those with recent medical school graduation may succeed with 3-4 months of intensive preparation. Read detailed preparation timeline →
Aim for 3,000-5,000 practice questions for adequate preparation. Research shows that candidates who practice 5,000+ questions have significantly higher pass rates (65-70%) compared to those who practice fewer questions. Quality matters too – ensure you understand the explanations thoroughly. Question bank comparison guide →
The average pass rate is 40-50% per session. However, pass rates vary based on preparation quality. Candidates with structured study plans, adequate question practice (3,000-5,000 questions), and 3-6 months preparation time have significantly higher success rates. Complete pass rate analysis →
No, clinical experience is not required for Part 1. The exam tests basic sciences only – anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and other fundamental topics. However, Part 2 (which tests clinical decision-making) benefits greatly from clinical exposure in obstetrics and gynaecology.
A combination approach works best: standard textbooks for foundation building, comprehensive question banks for practice (5,000+ questions), and focused revision materials. The most successful candidates use multiple resources including online question banks, RCOG guidelines, and topic-specific study guides. Complete resource guide →
The pass mark varies with each examination and is determined through standard-setting procedures (modified Angoff method). RCOG doesn’t publish numerical pass marks. Results are reported as Pass/Fail only. Aim for 70%+ accuracy in mock exams to feel confident about passing the real exam.
Any doctor with a primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) recognised by the relevant medical authority in their country can take MRCOG Part 1. You do not need postgraduate O&G training or UK GMC registration to sit the exam. Many candidates attempt Part 1 during internship or early residency while building their basic science foundation.
